Recco Technology
The RECCO technology allows you to be found by professional rescuers in case of avalanches or when lost outdoors. If your gear features RECCO reflectors, professional rescuers can use RECCO detectors to locate you. This two-part system sends out a directional radar signal that, upon hitting the RECCO reflector, returns a signal to guide rescuers to your whereabouts.
Since their introduction in 1983, RECCO handheld detectors have become essential tools for avalanche rescues worldwide, utilized by over 800 ski resorts and mountain rescue teams in 27 countries. The newly developed RECCO SAR helicopter detector can scan vast areas quickly to find missing individuals in outdoor settings and is currently operating in several locations across the Alps, North America, and Scandinavia, with plans for global expansion (check recco.com for the latest coverage details).
For everyone wearing it, the RECCO reflector is a simple way to increase your searchability. This small, passive electronic transponder, roughly the size of a band-aid and weighing less than four grams, is permanently mounted to your clothing and gear to prevent loss during an avalanche or emergency. You'll never need to remember to switch it on, and it requires no batteries, ensuring a maintenance-free experience with virtually unlimited lifespan.
The RECCO technology was pioneered by Mahnus Granhed through his collaboration with Stockholm’s Royal Institute of Technology, developed in response to a personal avalanche tragedy in the 1970s. The first working detector and reflector made their debut in 1983, and since then, this system has proven invaluable in avalanche rescues, now widely adopted by ski resorts, helicopter skiing businesses, and search and rescue teams as a vital tool for safety. It's essential to understand that while RECCO technology is an important feature, it should be viewed as a part of a broader safety strategy.
