Recco Technology

RECCO technology makes you detectable to professional rescuers in case of an avalanche or if you're lost outdoors. Wearing gear with RECCO reflectors allows rescuers to find you using RECCO detectors. The system works by sending a directional radar signal, which echoes back upon hitting the RECCO reflector, guiding rescuers to your location.

Handheld RECCO detectors, established in 1983, are standard tools for avalanche rescue globally, utilized in over 800 ski resorts and rescue organizations across 27 countries. The new RECCO SAR helicopter detector scans large areas rapidly for missing individuals outdoors and is operational in various locations in the Alps, North America, and Scandinavia, aiming for greater global coverage. The RECCO reflector is a small, passive electronic transponder, about the size of a band-aid, weighing less than 4 grams. It is permanently attached to clothing and gear, ensuring it remains in place during an avalanche or accident. This guarantees the reflector isn’t left behind, lost, or forgotten elsewhere. It's maintenance-free, has no batteries, and doesn’t require power, giving it an indefinite lifespan.

Invented by Mahnus Granhed with Stockholm's Royal Institute of Technology, RECCO technology emerged from his personal avalanche experience in the 1970s. The first detector and reflector debuted in 1983, and this system has since become crucial in avalanche rescues worldwide, adopted by ski resorts and rescuers as a vital tool. Remember, RECCO technology is only part of the larger picture of safety measures to minimize risks.
