What is IPXY?

The term 'IP' stands for 'International Protection', devised by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). However, it's often interpreted as 'Ingress Protection'. The numbers following 'IP' indicate levels of protection.

The letter 'X' refers to dust protection; numbers range from 0 (no protection) to 6 (the highest level where no dust can enter even under prolonged exposure).

'Y' indicates liquid protection levels (from 0 to 8). Zero means no protection, while eight allows devices to be submerged in water up to a depth of three meters for half an hour.
